On December 16, 1864, the Battle of Nashville took place in Tennessee, marking one of the most decisive engagements and complete victories for the Union Army during the American Civil War.
Union forces, led by Major General George H. Thomas, successfully launched a coordinated two-day offensive against the entrenched Confederate Army of Tennessee, commanded by General John Bell Hood, south of Nashville.
